Distractions tend to be caused due to a large number of situations: technology; tedium (everything you’re doing is unexciting so you take whatever interruption which seems to come along); working on what you’re doing hasn’t got short term reward (what’s in it for you?); and even those feelings of inadequacy when we don’t think we are able to perform a really good job, we search for distractions therefore we don’t do a really good job.

Distractions could possibly be external elements along the lines of pulsatinglight, beeps from the smartphone, pop-ups on your laptop, your telephone ringing, workplace confusion, individuals or family pets in your peripheral vision. The list is a long one and includes sounds, sights, smells and kinaesthetic (fluctuations in temperature within the room, bodily functions, pets needing your affection) distractions.

Distractions can be inside disturbances of your mind stuff like our negative self-talk (also known as our ego) that may doesn’t wish us to complete stuff that make it uncomfortable; the thousands of thoughts we have every day that are swirling around in our heads; and our lack of ability to detach ‘urgency’ from ‘emergency’; and multi-tasking.

How are you going to keep disturbances internal and external from ruining your business?

There are a few obvious answers: move the Smartphone out of sight and hearing, switch off the digital notifications, close the door so the house animals don’t bother you, and so forth.

However understanding how to detach Urgency from Emergency will help you pay attention to your online business. When the trouble is important, maybe even unavoidable but not life or business harming, it’s an urgency. Urgencies can be scheduled to be completed and paid attention to at a later time or day even when you want to do them now while you’re contemplating them!

If, however, the trouble is sudden, unforeseen, something ONLY you can perform and is also life or business threatening, it’s an emergency and needs to be handled instantly.

Learning to distinguish between urgencies and emergencies and then pay attention just to emergencies will keep disturbances far from your business and enable you to have a great, robust and effective enterprise.
